What is Zazen?

In Zen Buddhism, zazen (literally "seated meditation") is a meditative discipline that is typically the primary practice.  In the Soto Zen School (which is our tradition), zazen uses an approach known as "shikantaza," which literally means nothing but ("shikan") precisely ("da") sitting ("za").

Zazen is considered the heart of Japanese Soto Zen Buddhist practice.  The aim of zazen is suspending all judgmental thinking and letting words, ideas, images and thoughts pass by without getting involved in them.
