THE CORE OF OUR PRACTICE

To study the Way is to study the self.

To study the self is to forget the self.

To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things of the universe.

To be enlightened by all things of the universe is to cast off body and mind of the self as well as those of others.

- Dogen Zenji, 1200 to 1253

of the Soto Lineage

THE PRINCIPLES OF OUR PRACTICE

Caught in the self-centered dream,

only suffering (dukkha).

Holding to self-centered thoughts,

exactly the dream.

Each moment, life as it is,

the only teacher.

Being just this moment,

compassion's way.

(The Buddha's Four Noble Truths as adapted for contemporary practice by Charlotte Joko Beck and her students at the Ordinary Mind School.)
